The Leica X1 is a compact camera with a fixed lens and an APS-C sized sensor. The camera has the largest sensor in it’s class, dwarfing Micro Four Thirds and the Sigma Foveon. I received some personal hands-on time with the camera. While I wasn’t able to put a card in to take samples (I handled a prototype) the short experience with the camera was overall quite positive and, in fact, it may very well be a camera that will put more pressure on other companies to start really developing their te
I spent nearly a month with the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM , but it only took a single outing with it to realize that I preferred it to the lens that spends the most time on my Canon EOS 5D Mark II, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM. It wasn’t any one big thing though, instead it’s the small things, all added up, that made the Sigma’s images look just a bit better than the Canon’s. Sigma introduces the DP1s, an improved version of the original DP1 compact DSLR camera. The DP1s features a 14 Megapixel FOVEON X3 direct image sensor and enhanced performance when shooting backlight subjects. When Sigma announced the DP2, I’ll admit, I was immediately curious. I’d been quite interested in the DP1, and simply fascinated by the image samples that I’d seen, so with the announcement of the DP2 I was even more excited, hoping that some of the DP1’s “issues” had been worked out, and quite liking the idea of the 41mm (35mm equivalent) lens with an aperture now at f/2.8 (a stop faster than the DP1). Thankfully, Sigma was kind enough to send us a review sample, and when it arrived I was deter

Field Test Report Peter Burian tests five lenses with great light gathering ability: the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM, Tamron AF 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro, Tokina AF 50-135mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro DX, Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX and the Sigma AF 30mm f/1.4 EX HSM DC Because most digital SLR camera owners demand compact, lightweight lenses, the vast majority of zooms feature a small maximum aperture. A typical kit lens is designated as f/3.5-5.6 indicating that the maximum apertu
